Chucho Valdés Royal Quartet Live at La Halle aux Grains

At 81 years old, Philadelphia-born jazz pianist Kenny Barron remains a prolific force on the global music scene. Fresh off his 2024 album release, Beyond This Place, Barron took the stage in Toulouse alongside his long-standing trio featuring bassist Kiyoshi Kitagawa and drummer Johnathan Blake. Throughout the performance, Barron showed his signature soft, fluid touch on the Steinway piano. Blake brought delicate brushwork to the cymbals, while Kitagawa provided subtle, deft bass lines to anchor the sound. Together, the trio treated the crowd to a mix of original songs and classic covers. Highlights included a solo piano ballad medley, a quiet performance of Charlie Haden’s "Nightfall," and Barron's own fast-paced "Bud-Like." With graceful spacing and smooth improvisation, Barron explored each tune to its fullest. This live performance captures a master jazz artist drawing listeners into a warm, intimate world of sound.
