The Royal Opera House is home to two of the world's great artistic companies: The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet. The Royal Opera, under the artistic direction of Antonio Pappano, Music Director, and Oliver Mears, Director of Opera, is one of the world’s leading opera companies. Based in the iconic Covent Garden theatre, it is renowned both for its outstanding performances of traditional opera and for commissioning new works by today’s leading opera composers, such as Harrison Birtwistle, Mark-Anthony Turnage and Thomas Adès. Under the directorship of Kevin O’Hare, The Royal Ballet unites tradition and innovation in world-class performances, and is a driving force in the development of ballet as an art form. The Company’s extensive repertory embraces 19th-century classics, the singular legacy of works by Founder Choreographer Frederick Ashton and Principal Choreographer Kenneth MacMillan and the compelling new canon of work including pieces by Resident Choreographer Wayne McGregor and Artistic Associate Christopher Wheeldon.

Its 1,865 seats make the Deutsche Oper Berlin the largest opera house in Berlin and also Germany’s second-largest opera theatre. Opera history has been written here since 1912: chief conductors such as Bruno Walter, Lorin Maazel, Christian Thielemann and, since 2009, Donald Runnicles, have forged the theatre’s international reputation as a venue for grand opera; directors including Götz Friedrich and Hans Neuenfels, Christof Loy and Philipp Stölzl have created milestones of modern musical theatre here. With its broad repertoire ranging from Mozart to Richard Strauss and expanded under Dietmar Schwarz’ tenure since 2012 by regular world premieres on the main stage and cycles including, among others, Meyerbeer’s and Britten’s major works, the Deutsche Oper Berlin offers its audience the opportunity of experiencing opera at the highest level and in almost unmatched variety on more than 200 evenings per year.
