Classical music doesn’t always do exactly what it says on the tin. Brahms never told the story behind his Symphony No. 3 but from impetuous opening to sunset finish, it’s clear that there’s a tale here that runs too deep for words. The same goes for the Chinese-American composer Chen Yi, fusing postmodernist techniques and philosophies with traditional Chinese idioms in her orchestral work Momentum.
