Inside The Rose International Dance Prize 2025
Documentary
Director Romain Girard immerses viewers in the multifaceted world of style-fusing choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, whose Flemish-Moroccan heritage enriches his globally acclaimed work.
Filmed over two years across three continents, this documentary offers unprecedented access to Cherkaoui’s creative process: from “Vlaemsch (chez moi)” in Antwerp, where ritual and rebellion collide, to “Ukiyo-e” in Geneva, a meditation on tradition and modernity, and Tokyo’s cyberpunk-inspired “Evangelion Beyond.” Each reveals his commitment to cultural dialogue, bridging sacred heritage and pop futurism. Through rehearsal footage and candid reflections, we witness his alchemy, Sufi poetry woven into contemporary movement, ballet fractured by butoh, and street dance woven into classical structures.
Whether collaborating with Marina Abramović or choreographing for Beyoncé and Lady Gaga, Cherkaoui’s work defies labels and comes alive when set free.
